This article discusses the affects that violent video games have on kids. Are kids more aggressive and/or desensitize to real world problems or are there other factors that affect the empathy of kids. Do you agree or disagree with the article? And what are your opinions on the topic?
I definitely do agree that violent video games makes kids desensitized to violence because I've seen it happen in person. My friends younger brother plays a lot of GTA and fighting games and I've seen him try to implement what he learned from the games in real life by trying to use the fighting moves on my little sister and he doesn't seem to see what he's doing wrong even if someone tells him that it's wrong to do so. Younger kids are influenced really easily so it makes sense that they imitate what they say in video games in real life.
ReplyDeleteThis was such an interesting read and I've had this conversation so many times with my peers. I grew up with brothers playing Grand Theft Auto and laughing as their characters blew up cars and robbed banks and killed each other. I've seen what video games are, what they encompass, and despite my not playing them, I know what kind of desensitization they can instill in those who do. It is impossible to escape the lack of empathy & compassion when you begin virtually slaughtering people via video games at the age of 10. Your brain is still developing, you're still finding your sense of self, and you're still forming your thoughts about people and the world. If we continue to allow kids (and teenagers, and really, anyone) to have access to games that encourage violence and utter disrespect to people and property, it is without a doubt they will grow to feel differently about what pain and discomfort is compared to people who do not engage in such video games. I'd also like to point out that most of the people playing these games are male, which leads me to believe that dudes are conditioned to think that violence and disrespect to authority are inherently "cool" and "masculine" things. I think it's cool to engage in whatever you find interesting, but remember that compassion, kindness, and empathy are probably the COOLEST things humanity has ever known.

In my experience, teacher designed games are the most effective in the classroom. This article discussed their advantages and disadvantages and the characteristics that create an excellent game for the classroom especially those designed by teachers to fit into a current teaching topic.
